Thane Call Centre Employees Detained For Defrauding

In a major raid, more than 500 employees across several call centres in Maharashtra’s Thane district were detained by police during the wee hours of Wednesday for allegedly duping citizens of the US. Police officials reported that the raids were conducted by over 200 police personnels at call centres in Mira Road.

The call centres workers would pretend to be tax officials of the US and blackmail Americans over tax irregularities. They would ask for the defaulters’ financial and bank details, failing which they would allegedly threaten them with dire consequences, including legal action. After obtaining the requisite details from the American citizens. The call centre employees would then siphon off money from their accounts. Some agents based in the US were involved and were given a 30% commission for every successful scam. A gang based in Ahmedabad is suspected to be behind the operation. The Thane police got a tip-off from one of the disgruntled employees.

Over 70 people have been arrested so far. Out of all the employees detained many were newcomers and didn’t know anything about the scams. They were however freed.
