Noida: 14-Yr-Old Minor Crushes Pregnant Woman To Death, Husband Critically Injured
An underage parking attendant ran over a 26-year-old pregnant woman at Noida’s Sector 18 market on Sunday night. The woman’s husband was also hit by the car and is stated to be in critical condition, according to a News18 report.
The woman has been identified as Mansi Singhal. She was hit by the car twice. Upon rushing her to the nearest hospital, she was declared by the doctors, to have been brought dead. The lady was pregnant with an 8-month-old baby.
How did the mishap occur
The incident took place when the 14-year-old parking attendant was speeding while reversing the car and ran Mansi over. The car hit her husband and rammed into two other cars before finally crashing into a pole. The police said that the parking attendant was arrested and the car was seized.
The woman received fatal injuries to her head and was taken to Kailash Hospital Sector 27. The relatives of the victims demanded strict action against the culprit. They also demanded that the parking contractors should be booked, as it was their fault to give the car to a minor. One of the relatives said, “even walking there is not safe as there are minors who are parking the cars.”
Shevtambar Pandey, Circle Officer of Noida Police said that they have launched an investigation. “The couple was out for shopping on Sunday evening in the market of Noida Sector-18, when a parking attendant, who lost control of his car, rammed into them.” The Logical Indian tried reaching out to the concerned police, but they were not available for a comment.
Minors behind the steering wheel
Minors often have been at the centre of the headlines for driving and more often than not, them driving lead to fatal accidents, therefore claiming innocent lives. A Delhi teenager was charged with culpable homicide after a video of a hit-and-run case, crushing a man to death with an overspeeding Mercedes in Delhi surfaced online.
The police, during their investigation also unearthed that the accused teenager was found rash driving in the past, causing another road accident with another vehicle. He had been challaned thrice earlier, for overspeeding and wrong parking.
Young Bengalureans including teenagers have been spotted committing traffic violation and they themselves are prone to serious accidents. The number of traffic violators is increasing by leaps and bounds, each year. The number of riders/drivers booked for dodging traffic rules and committing offences such as reckless driving, over speeding and riding triples is at an overwhelming 2,94,210 cases and most of the offenders are youngsters and minors.
Penalty for minors, if caught driving and causing accidents
If minors are caught driving and causing fatal accidents, their parents might end up in jail for three years and have to pay a fine of Rs 25,000. Along with this, the registration of the vehicle might also be cancelled. This provision was a part of the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill 2016, thereby ushering in the single biggest reform in the laws governing the road and safety.
The penalties for traffic violation have also been hiked ten-fold — Rs 1,000 for jumping red light or driving without seatbelts/helmet. It may also cost three-month licence suspension. Talking on the phone while driving will result in a penalty of Rs 5,000 instead of the current Rs 1,000.
Cabinet also approved the minister’s proposal to bring taxi aggregator services such as Ola and Uber under the ambit of this law. Violating the law will cost these taxi services fines between Rs 25,000 and Rs 1 lakh.
The compensation for road fatalities was fixed at Rs 10 lakh while the payout in hit-and-run cases has been increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2 lakh. If these laws are broken by lawmakers and government servants then they will have to pay twice the amount.
The Logical Indian Take
The Logical Indian community asks the concerned to intervene and make sure that the culprit does not go scot-free. He must be penalised by the law and strict actions must be taken against him. The government should also ensure that minors must not be allowed to drive vehicles and if they are found driving or riding on the roads, they should be strictly penalised.
Apart from the culprit, the employer of the minor parking attendant is also at fault for employing a minor. The parking lot contractor should have employed someone who is 18 or above.
The Logical Indian also urges the parents to look into the matter so that their minor wards do not sit behind the wheels before the age of 18. Their irresponsible actions, more often than not have claimed innocent lives. It also urges the contractors of the parking lot to not recruit underage employees.
